Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge Hybrid SUV 2024

Welcome to another review. This time, we're diving into the Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge, a plug-in hybrid SUV.

First Impressions

The Volvo XC90 has exceeded most expectations in terms of comfort, drive quality, practicality, and performance. Volvo is known for being one of the safest cars on the road. While I haven't had the need to test this out personally, it's reassuring to know that safety is a top priority for Volvo.

Pricing and Comparison

This is a big premium SUV, and it comes with a big premium price. The top-of-the-range model costs around 1.8 million Rand. That’s a lot of money, but it’s worth noting that the Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid is a million Rand more. While the Range Rover is a bit faster and has a renowned luxurious presence, the Volvo XC90 is not far behind.

Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the XC90 features a 2.0 L 4-cylinder supercharged engine that puts out 233 KW and 400 Nm of torque. That's impressive for a standalone engine, but the main difference is the plug-in hybrid system. This boosts the power to 340 KW and 709 Nm of torque. The battery, which is good for about 19 kWh, offers around 55 km of pure electric range.

Fuel Economy

One of the standout features of the XC90 is its fuel economy. Even when running on the engine alone, the fuel consumption is impressive. I managed to get about 4.9 L per 100 km, and on one occasion, I averaged 0.8 L per 100 km on a 12 km drive.

Design and Aesthetics

The exterior design of the XC90 is familiar yet timeless. Volvo has updated some of the cosmetics, including bumpers, side skirts, and gloss black elements. The headlights, shaped like Thor's hammer, are a distinctive feature. The interior, however, shows its age with an older dash layout and a vertical infotainment system that lacks modern functionality.

Interior Features

The driver’s point of view is where the XC90 shines. The steering wheel is simple yet comfortable, and the digital driver’s display, although not highly customizable, is functional. The Bowers and Wilkins audio system is another highlight, offering an unparalleled auditory experience.

Comfort and Practicality

The XC90 offers all the luxury touches you’d expect from a premium SUV. The leather interior is soft and supple, and the seats are highly adjustable and heated. The practicality extends to the rear seats, which offer ample legroom and their own air conditioning controls.

Seven-Seat Configuration

The XC90 is a seven-seater, and while the third row is more suitable for children, it adds to the car’s versatility. The boot space is enormous when the seats are down, and there are various storage solutions to keep your belongings organized.

Charging and Air Suspension

The XC90 comes with both a home charging cable and an AC charging cable for quicker charges at public stations. The air suspension adds to the comfort, allowing you to adjust the ride height depending on the driving mode.

The GDR Test

Should you get the car, drive the car, or remove it from your list? I would definitely recommend getting the Volvo XC90. It offers a lot of value for its price, including air suspension, a plug-in hybrid system, a luxurious interior, and a range of practical features.

Conclusion

If you're in the market for a Volvo XC90 T8 Recharge Hybrid SUV 2024, check out reputable car dealers and vet them first to ensure you get excellent service.
